our team

CanPHI presently operates with a four-person board of Directors, and is building a network of associates and partners across Canada in order to promote the Passive House approach to construction in all regions of the country. Our team of staff and associates includes:

Dr. Guido Wimmers, Dipl.Ing. MRAIC, Architect (NL), LEED AP
Guido Wimmers is a specialist in energy-efficient and environmentally friendly architecture. Before moving to Canada in 2007, he worked as a Passive House architect, independent consultant and project manager for Energy Tirol in Austria, where he designed, supervised and participated in the construction of more than 40 residential, commercial and institutional Passive House buildings. Concurrently he taught numerous courses in energy efficient architecture and Passive House construction both in Austria and Italy. Guido was one of the initiators of the first certified Canadian Passive House building, the Austria House for the 2010 Olympics in Whistler, and he currently works both on residential and commercial Passive House projects in Western Canada, as well as teaching Passive House design and construction courses with CanPHI. He holds a master's degree in architecture and a PhD in engineering science.

Malcolm Isaacs, P.Eng.
Malcolm Isaacs is a civil engineering graduate of the University of Ottawa, with over 20 years experience as a consultant in Canadian low-energy construction techniques and energy conservation. He is a pioneer of Passive House construction in Canada, and in 2005 he designed and built the first house in Canada to Passive House specifications, in which he presently lives. He now works full-time on developing Passive House construction solutions for clients in the Ottawa area, and in teaching Passive House techniques as a member of CanPHI’s training team. Malcolm has worked extensively at the PassivhausInstitut in Germany, and edited technical papers for the International Passive House Conferences in 2008 (Nurenburg) and 2009 (Frankfurt).

Dr. Andrea Frisque, Dipl.Ing. LEED AP
Andrea Frisque provides technical direction and leadership in sustainable design for buildings and communities. She has extensive experience related to analyses and computer simulations for sustainable design, and she uses her extensive knowledge in heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics to provide cost-effective sustainable design solutions to a wide range of special projects. She holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics and a Mechanical Engineering Degree from Germany.

Andrea’s focus within CanPHI is on developing and delivering a Passive House design course focusing on commercial buildings and their mechanical systems, currently scheduled for delivery in 2012 in locations across Canada.

Marybeth Welty
Marybeth Welty has a degree in mathematics and a diploma in interior design, and is involved with many aspects of sustainable and energy efficient buildings. She is now involved in the development and delivery of training courses with CanPHI, and she’s also working at the design level on various Passive House projects and renovations in Western Canada, including building calculations and PHPP analysis for projects seeking Passive House Certification.

Marybeth sits on the steering committee for the Metro Vancouver branch of the Cascadia Green Building Council.  She is also co-founder and co-chair of Emerging Green Builders of Metro Vancouver, a committee that aims to educate and connect students, new professionals and existing professionals on methods of green and sustainable building.

Stephan Lotz
Stephan Lotz is a Master Carpenter and Master Electrician based in Darmstadt, Germany, who specializes in detailing wood frame Passive House buildings, both during design and construction.  He has assisted CanPHI with our training course development and delivery, and he is working with us in developing a 2012 Passive House road show (the “Just Build It!” Tour), in which we’ll visit Canadian communities from coast to coast to demonstrate Passive House construction techniques and components to builders, designers and homeowners from Halifax to Vancouver.
